We have had a busy and productive Fall!  Some highlights have been our field trip to the Wassonville Cemetary to hear about some Wellman history.  Also, Math Night sponsored by the Parent Boosters, our Halloween Party and our Veteran's Day Assembly. Enjoy the pictures!

4th Grade States Fair

All students SHOULD have brought home a paper we did in class that will help
them study the capitals and abbreviations for the 12 states in the midwest
region. We worked on and finished this last Friday, April 15th. We will take
the Midwest test sometime during the week of May 2nd. I will let you know
the exact date as we get closer.

Yesterday all students brought (should have) a paper home detailing a state
project they will need to work on at home. I'm attaching the same paper to
this email.

We will be having our States' Fair on Thursday, May 12th. Students will be
displaying their project they make at home, as well as all the projects we've
done here at school. This is always an exciting time and the kids are always
proud to display and talk about everything they have found out about their
state!

They will be displaying their projects during the day for other classes from
12:45-3:00. We will then have an open house for parents, family, friends,
and the public from 5:30-6:30. I encourage each of you to make it possible
for your child to be here for the display times.

Internet Safety

It is becoming increasingly clear to me that kids are social networking at a much younger age and many of your children are using the internet daily.  Are they safe?  Have you talked with them about it?  I have been taking a tech class through Grant Wood and these are just a few sites that I learned about that might help you talk with your kids about how to safe stay on the internet.

There has been a lot going on in 4th grade lately!  Besides MAP Testing and the Book Fair, the 4th graders have kept busy with planning and writing a story in Language Arts, learning about fractions in Math.  We finished up Unit 7 on Friday and will review for the test on Tuesday, Wednesday we will take the test.  In Science they finished up 'Rocks and Minerals" and are now reading their biographies and taking notes on the person from their state in Social Studies.  We are ready to start a new theme in Reading entitled, "Problem Solvers," and the first story is "My Name is Maria Isabel."  Skills we will be working on are: predicting outcomes, words with the suffix -ible, base words and inflected forms for nouns, adjectives, and verbs, and the irregular verb -be.  We will also have spelling again this week.

Thanks to all the parents who joined us for Parent-Teacher Conferences!  It is always enjoyable to talk with you about your children.  We look forward to meeting with the rest of you this week.

Fun Night

Just a reminder the WE Carnival is this weekend from 5:30-7:30, with a
spaghetti supper from 5-7.

We are still in need of items for 4B's "Candy Basket" and 4A's Hawkeyes Basket. Keep in mind the money from the classroom baskets benefit every child in the school. In the past
the PTO has bought classroom computers, sponsored field trips, given
children free books, bought classroom cameras, and so very much more! I told the
kids to think of the bag of candy, or Hawkeye item as their trade for using a laptop!  : }

Thanks for your support!

January 10. 2011

We all survived a full week after the Holiday Break and Mrs. Busch and I feel like we got a lot accomplished!  In Reading we are working on the story, "A Very Important Day."  Skills we are covering are: spelling patterns -ur, -or, and -ir, idioms, categorizing and classifying information, possessives, and journal writing.  In Math this past week we took the test for Unit 4 and will begin Unit 5: Big Numbers, Estimation, and Computation on Tuesday.  I also introduced the kids to Pentominoes, a puzzle that consists of 12 pieces that one manipulates to form geometric shapes, usually squares and rectangles.  They also practiced these on a website that let them solve easy, medium, and hard puzzles.  "Motion and Design" is the current Science unit the kids are working on and this week they will be constructing their own vehicles.  Pictures to come!   REMEMBER the end of the 2nd quarter is Thursday and all reading goals are due by that afternoon at 3:30!  Have a good week!
