Science - Earth Materials

Our current Science unit is entitled, "Earth Materials." The first investigation the students worked on was observing, drawing, and taking apart a mock rock in much the same way a geologist would examine a mineral or rock in the field. The students were to discover what their mock rock was made of and be able to cite evidence from the mock rock itself and to explore what properties geologists look for such as: hardness, texture, shape, smell, size, color, and luster. The students were to realize that rocks are made from different minerals and that geologists look at the properties of rocks and minerals.
